Osteopathic Philosophy

"Osteopathic medicine creates opportunities for innovation in health care."
~ FamilyCare Mission Statement and Values

What is osteopathic medicine?

Doctors of osteopathic medicine (DOs) practice alongside doctors of medicine (MDs) and have equivalent education and professional standards. Osteopathic medicine is distinguished by its emphasis on caring for the whole patient rather than on treating disease. Read more about osteopathic philosophy.

Osteopathic medicine and FamilyCare

FamilyCare's commitment to integrative medicine — treating the whole person and integrating physical and mental health care — can be traced to our roots in osteopathic medicine. Along with current CEO and President Jeff Heatherington, our articles of incorporation were signed by two osteopathic physicians, Dr. Arthur O. Rott and Dr. Carl M. Ericson. Today, doctors of osteopathic medicine (DOs) practice alongside doctors of medicine (MDs) in our provider network.

Supporting osteopathic education

FamilyCare's commitment to osteopathic medicine is reflected in its support of osteopathic medical education. While serving as director of the Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons of Oregon, FamilyCare President and CEO Jeff Heatherington helped bring together Western University of Health Sciences and Samaritan Health Services to build the COMP-Northwest campus in Lebanon, Ore.
